Neo by Amp

Neo is the rebuilt Amp CLI, an AI coding agent tool that runs longer-running coding agents directly in your terminal for developers who want less handholding and more autonomy. Codenamed Neo, it rebuilds Amp on a new architecture that is remote-controllable, compaction-first, plugin-powered, and faster on large threads. The standout feature is remote control: when you start a thread in the CLI, you can control it from ampcode.com, getting live updates and sending, queuing, dequeuing, or cancelling the agent's messages, with optional passkey authentication for remote sessions. Neo also removes manual context management. Instead of watching context percentages or deciding when to hand off, Amp now compacts a thread automatically once the context window reaches 90% full, summarizing the current context and starting a fresh window so the agent keeps going. This release also officially ships the Amp Plugin API, which lets plugins handle events with amp.on(...) for tool calls, tool results, and agent lifecycle events, register custom tools the agent can call with amp.registerTool(...), and add commands. Additional changes include message queuing and steering, a reworked permissions model, and performance and efficiency improvements aimed at very large threads. Neo is a rebuild of an existing product rather than a brand-new tool, and it is being rolled out gradually rather than released all at once.
